PDF to Word not working? 7 fixes before you re-upload
Fix blank output, garbled OCR, and layout surprises when converting PDF to Word in your browser.
PDF to Word is one of the most requested conversions — and the most frustrating when output looks wrong. Before trying another cloud service that uploads your file, walk through these browser-local fixes on Document Converter.
Check if your PDF is a scan or text
Try selecting text in the original PDF. If nothing highlights, you have an image scan — enable OCR and pick the correct language.
If text selects cleanly, turn OCR off for faster extraction. Mixed PDFs may need splitting: extract digital pages separately from scans.
Blank or nearly empty Word output
Password-protected PDFs fail silently or produce empty docs — remove encryption first.
Some PDFs use custom fonts embedded as vectors without Unicode mapping — OCR may be the only path. Try PDF to TXT first to see if any characters extract.
Layout looks nothing like the original
This is expected for complex PDFs. PDF stores absolute positioning; Word uses flow layout. Sidebars, footnotes, and multi-column magazines will not round-trip.
For editing a paragraph, PDF to TXT may suffice. For reformatting a report, budget manual cleanup time.
OCR gibberish or wrong characters
Pick the primary document language. Re-scan at 300 DPI flat on a contrasting background.
Bilingual documents may need two passes with different OCR languages. Handwriting and stamps routinely fail — OCR is for typed text.
Browser tab crashes or hangs
Large scanned PDFs exhaust mobile RAM. Try on desktop Chrome, split the PDF into chunks first, or reduce page count.
Close other tabs during OCR — Tesseract.js is CPU-intensive.
When to use desktop software instead
Choose Adobe Acrobat or desktop Word for court filings requiring exact pagination, complex magazines, or heavily redacted government PDFs.
Browser tools excel at extracting editable text for everyday office work — not professional prepress.
